After spending five years surrounding the Mets with the power of faith practice and prayer, it’s time to face the obvious: are we teaching the next MetsGen about baseball, too? All our efforts will be diluted if future fans don’t understand a 3-4-3 double play.
The Talmud lays out responsibilities of fathers to their sons (and mothers to their daughters) which include teaching the faith…some scholars recommend thirty minutes of Torah Talk each day. Further, discuss the Mets (or your faith) while having a catch, batting practice, or a workout with your child. Studies show that cognition is improved when combined with physical performance.
What are other joyful ways to share and stimulate Mets knowledge and wisdom in your family? Here are some … share your ideas, too, at Pray4Mets@gmail.com.
- sing baseball songs on long car trips, on hikes, or around the campfire, including ‘Meet the Mets.’
- include baseball player and manager names in morning or nighttime prayers
- read baseball books aloud
- watch baseball-themed movies together
- create a family YouTube biography channel of the Mets’ greatest players & managers
- make a family tree with baseball (and all sports) affiliations and events noted
- serve Cracker Jacks for dessert
- encourage students’ school assignments to be focused on baseball themes
- watch and discuss baseball games together at the stadium or on television
- make a timeline of and watch historic baseball games and events, including THIS ONE
Lord, hear our prayer: keep New York, the nation and the Mets safely on their forward march to the post-season. Continue to nurture wisdom in management, faith among the fans, and bestow some miracles on the bullpen…Amen.
